Seven children living a life of poverty at the foot of an ancient shrine!
We don’t have a bathroom, which is especially difficult for all of us. The house is not that old, but it is in very bad condition – says the humble young man, Jovan Trajković (13), as he tells us about life problems he is facing.
The sound of the river Pčinja, the lovely landscape, and the centrally located church of the Most Holy Mother of God, show us all the beauty of the village of Donja Trnica in the municipality of Trgovište. However, instead of a smile on Jovan’s face, a sad expression awaited us, which best illustrates the cruel reality of everyday life for his family.
I had a head injury, so I recently had surgery. We didn’t have the means to fix the house. The only thing I managed to do was to build a room where we make cheese because we keep twenty goats. Money from the sale of cheese, along with child allowance and social assistance are our only source of income – father Zlatan informs us, who along with mother Jelena, cares for seven children.
Although we initially thought that the Trajkovićs only had male children, when in addition to Jovan we met Miloš (14), Sava (10), Petar (7) and Nemanja (3), we were happy when we later met the twins Miljana (1) and Mila (1). The smiles on their faces are the only light in the home where gray-black is the dominant color…
We asked the family what kind of help would be most meaningful to them, so mother Jelena added:
We would most like to renovate the house and add a bathroom. Also, it would mean a lot if we could have a few more goats because there is great interest in our cheese. A particular specialty of ours is cheese with hot peppers.
This hardworking family is fighting as hard as it can. However, whether it is an addition, renovation or purchase of a new house, they are unable to solve this pressing issue on their own. And on top of it all, they have seven children!
The Charity organization Serbs for Serbs is launching a large fundraiser to help the Trajković family. We invite all donors and friends of the charity to join us in order to successfully complete another major project. Let’s each be a symbolic well-wisher in their home!
