“Father, mother and only friend” – little Anastasia (11) grows up without a mother, and lives in a small room. Her dad is her whole world!
It breaks my heart that I can’t provide them with a house, so that they don’t grow up in this little 10m2 room. I am their father and mother, and often their only friend. Their mother left them a long time ago, says Negomir Luković, single father of Đorđe (12) and Anastasia (11).
The Lukovićs live in the village of Zahumsko. As if drawn by a magnet, we often visit that mountainous and mystical landscape that stretches beyond Sjenica to the border with Montenegro. In this wild and beautiful region, tucked away are several villages inhabited by a small number of Serbians.
There are bears and wolves, so we are a little afraid. But our father is here. He is our whole world!, says lovely Anastasia.
Their grandmother Milomirka (78), who is suffering from dementia, also lives with them, and they spend their days together in that one room, that has nothing. They sleep together on one pull out bed.
The house is made of wood with styrofoam stuck on. Winters can be very difficult. We also have a problem with electricity, when it rains or when there are strong winds, we lose power. Sometimes for two or three nights… I used to live in the upper house, but it belongs to my brother and it is locked all the time, even though he doesn’t live there. There was some bitterness in Negomir’s voice, as he briefly explained too common family disagreements.
The biggest victims of disagreements and misunderstandings are these humble and quiet children. While it may be difficult for them to understand what happens in adult relationships, they are more than aware of their living conditions. They have never known anything better, but they constantly dream about a nice house where they would have their own rooms, beds and bathroom.
We don’t have a bathroom, which makes it difficult. In the summer we bathe outside, and in the winter we use the barn. When it’s too cold, we wait a few days, twelve-year-old Đorđe sadly told us.
Despite everything, Negomir not only takes care of two children and his sick mother, but also impressively and meticulously maintains this small space. You have to keep in mind that everything happens here – maintaining hygiene, cooking, eating, sleeping, dressing, studying… It’s not easy.
They both listen and help me a lot, and despite all the hardships, they are good students. Anči washes the dishes, kneads the dough and makes the bed, while Đorđe helps with the two cows and chopping wood. We keep another five or six chickens, plant potatoes and beans, do a little farming, but all by hand. There is no work around here, and I can’t go anywhere because of the children and my sick mother. I also have some health problems, but we are persevering, the father explained the situation in this unfortunate desolate area.
Unfortunately, they don’t even receive social assistance because the land is in their grandmother’s name. They barely make it through the month, as they say, “scraping by day after day“. Đorđe told us that he only has two sweaters, three t-shirts and two pairs of sneakers, and Anastasia only one pair of sneakers!
We don’t have enough clothes or shoes. We would also like to have a place to celebrate birthdays, to sometimes invite friends over from school to play. Hardly anyone comes, there is nowhere to sit down, they complained.
Negomir appealed for help on Facebook.
Yes, I wrote you then that I lived in hope that you would come. Thank God you came. I have remained here to struggle and fight, there is no other option. I invite good people, if possible, to help us get a better roof over our heads…
The sacrifice and the immense love of this wonderful father, Negomir, are the most valuable things he has to give to his little ones, and this must be rewarded. The Charity organization Serbs for Serbs is launching a major campaign to provide a happier life for the Luković family. We invite all good people to help build them a house!
