Five children ended up in a CAMPER TRAILER! Their father survived a severe traffic accident!
Just when we think we’ve seen it all, we see something completely new and shocking – due to unfortunate life circumstances, the seven-member Mikuš family ended up on the street, that is, they moved into an old camper trailer. To make matters worse, last year the father was involved in a severe traffic accident from which he is still recovering. Unfortunately, he can no longer perform the job he had, and a modest disability pension is not enough to support such a large family, let alone solve their housing issue!

“Life brought us to this situation!”
But let’s start from the beginning. The Mikuš family lives in Progar (municipality of Surčin), and consists of Zoran, Dragica, Nemanja (18), Jasmina (14), Marijana (7), Milena (7), and Andreja (5). This is not a “typical” family in social need, but people whom life literally brought to the situation they are in now.
“We curl up like sardines in two beds in the trailer, but it can get cold. When someone snores, we can’t fall asleep, and Jasmina always puts her feet in our faces,” complained the sweet and friendly twins, adding that they are most afraid of bugs with ten legs.

“My friends don’t know where I live…”
Due to broken family relationships, after years of anxiety and significant problems, they lost the house owned by Zoran’s parents. Thus, a few years ago, they ended up in a camper trailer for the first time, covering it with plastic sheets to get a little more space. Thanks to good people, for a time they stayed in a house in exchange for taking care of it, but it was sold. No one wanted to take in a family so large anymore, so six months ago they returned to their trailer, the only home they have.
“In the beginning, we were caught in that deluge, so it was really painful. Now that it’s summer, it’s much easier. What hurts me the most is that we don’t have a bathroom, but have to use an improvised one in the yard. We heat water in plastic jugs in the sun. Most of the friends I hang out with don’t even know where I live,” Jasmina joined in.

“How did you hit me of all people, with five children?!”
The little yard is neat as a pin; it is clear that they diligently take care of everything. There are fruit trees, a small garden and a greenhouse, a space for children to play, shade… Literally a place to enjoy, the only thing missing is a proper house. And we have no doubt that these hardworking people would have managed to build it at some point—they even took out a loan for a plot of land, which currently takes up more than half of his pension (31,700 dinars). But…
“I was returning from work, but my car broke down and I was forced to pull over into the emergency lane on the highway. Unfortunately, I didn’t get out of the way in time and another car hit me, throwing me out of my car from the force of the impact. I saw someone’s shoes approaching me and heard: ‘Are you okay?’ To that I only answered: ‘How did you hit me of all people, with five children?!’ and then I passed out. I lost consciousness and don’t remember anything else,” told the father, Zoran.

A volunteer during the NATO bombing!
His back was fractured, his ribs were cracked, and there were various other fractures; his lung was damaged and he could no longer breathe on his own, and he suffered internal bleeding… He ended up in resuscitation and underwent numerous surgeries!
“I like to say now, half-jokingly, that ‘Pera up there’ said: ‘Brother, you’re not meant to be here yet. You have a reason, go back!’ I saw it as a second chance and, in fact, a second birthday. I returned to my family. Though, only after a couple of months. A long recovery followed, therapies, exercises… At first, I couldn’t even move on my own. What hurts more than the pain is that now I can’t help as much as I should. I want to, but I can’t,” continued this former volunteer during the bombing, even though he could easily have been in another country whose citizenship he holds.

“I put all my interests aside…”
It is unnecessary to even talk about how the other family members experienced and survived all of this; you will hear them in the video that will be published soon. We will only mention that his wife Dragica soon lost her job, as she says, because they feared she would take a long sick leave to care for her husband. The oldest son Nemanja, although only 18 years old, started working in his father’s position as a physical laborer so they could somehow manage to get by.
“Because of the family and the whole situation, I put all my interests and hobbies aside, to be on ‘standby’. Simply until I see that I have time for myself again. After work, I mow lawns and maintain green spaces,” said this young man, who is a great lover of music, drawing, video editing, and much more, and with whom it is a real pleasure to talk because he sounds more mature than many adults.

Happynessssss!
Much more could be written about the Mikuš family. Our interviews with them were longer than with any of the families we have launched aid campaigns for so far. Still, we will just take this opportunity to invite you to join forces and help them. We want them to finally find peace and to always feel what the youngest girls answered when we asked them how they felt when we announced we were coming:
“Happynessssssss!”

So they don’t face winter in a camper trailer!
This is a family that will surely know how to care for the house they receive and who, God willing, will be in a position to help others tomorrow. They deserve our help in these difficult moments so they do not face winter in a camper trailer. Therefore, join the new campaign of the Charity Organization Serbs for Serbs!
