He couldn’t express it with words, so he answered with a pencil. This is the greatest wish of little Marko (5) from Ribnik!

He couldn’t express it with words, so he answered with a pencil. This is the greatest wish of little Marko (5) from Ribnik!

My dream is to have 1,000 toys one day,” said little Marko (5) from Gornji Ribnik in Republika Srpska, charmingly. When asked what his greatest wish was, he looked at us sadly and, opening his notebook, silently showed the house he had drawn!

Toys and a house, something that most children simply take for granted, are unattainable dreams for this boy. The look he gave us at that moment, apart from breaking even the hardest of hearts, seemed to tell the entire life story of the tormented Gajić family.

Unfortunately, we don’t have anything of our own. We were given this house to use, but the two or three rooms we have are not very comfortable because the wind blows from all directions, the electricity often goes out and the humidity is high, and they are not spacious enough for the nine of us, said father, Đuro, who, by the way, was a first-class soldier and who, as he says, gave his health for Republika Srpska.

Today, Đuro and his wife Biljana are both battling hernias and gallstones. On social assistance, a meager veteran’s allowance (114 KM), occasional daily wages and a few animals, they raise seven children – Marija (23), Milena (22), Jelena (20), Stojana (16), Nedeljko (14), Dejan (7) and Marko (5).

The four oldest daughters sleep together in one bed, and the rest of us are crammed together in the living room. You could say it’s cramped. Đuro would work, but no one wants to register him for work, and I can’t. Sometimes I’m in so much pain that I can’t even get up. You know, I also have mental health issues, my nerves are shot. The older daughters work seasonally whenever they can, and they take care of the household, continued mother Biljana.

A lot has really fallen on the daughters’ shoulders, especially the eldest, Marija, who is the de facto pillar of the household due to her parents’ serious health issues. We spoke with her in a room with walls entirely covered with posters and painted flags.

In addition to the bed, the four of us share only one closet. The conditions are not exactly ideal, but we try our best. We paint constantly, although it is of no use because of the humidity, even our clothes are ruined. It is hardest in the winter because it is so cold, we cover ourselves with several blankets at night. We used to draw flags when we were little, that way we learned countries and capitals more easily, and I bought posters with my first salary to cover these walls a little. Now I am looking for a job, but, unfortunately, there is nothing in Ribnik, said Marija.

With teary eyes, she told us that, unfortunately, they have no friends because no one likes to hang out with them because of the situation they are in. She also admitted that there are many days when they run out of food, but they somehow manage to get by. Apart from her and her sisters, fourteen-year-old Nedeljko is just as hardworking, as he has been chopping wood since he was 10!

Life is such that you have to fight. We always hope for things to get better, but somehow it doesn’t seem like it will, concluded father Đuro, somewhat dejected after everything he has experienced.

There is much more that could be written about this honorable, suffering family. We could even ask ourselves – is it possible that our soldiers who bled on the front lines and families with seven children could live such difficult lives?! But that would not help them.

We would therefore like to invite you, through your donations, to be part of this new charity Serbs for Serbs campaign. Let’s, as little Marko drew in his notebook, hand over the keys to the Gajić family’s new home as soon as possible!
