“Their house is falling apart, they bathe in a shed, and they earn their daily bread in a barn. The Hornjak family URGENTLY needs help!”
“There was a terrible storm. Everything was flying apart, and a tornado tore off part of our roof and house. All the windows and doors cracked, so we still have to cover some of the broken glass with blankets. Although, there’s hardly any difference between the temperature outside and inside the house anyway…“, began little Zorica (12), telling a story that leaves no one unmoved.

“He works in a barn for only 30,000 Serbian dinars a month!”
The Hornjak family lives in extremely difficult conditions in the village of Mošorin, near Titel. Their partially collapsed house is just one of many problems they face. Mother Živana, father Miroslav, and their children Jovan (24), Rade (20), Slobodan (16), and Zorka—are even forced to use a former shed as a bathroom, which does not even have a roof. There are also various physical and mental health issues that we will not write about publicly.
“We live modestly, making do with what we have, but we often have to go without. The older boys do hard physical labour in the barn – they clean in two shifts every day, prepare feed for the cows… Unfortunately, they can’t earn much. Rade earns barely 30,000 Serbian dinars a month. My husband works in construction and in the forest, but it’s not steady, and I used to work, but unfortunately I had to stop because I got sick. I hope I will be able to get a job again soon, there’s a dairy nearby,” continued the mother, Živana.

Where they will go and how they’ll manage – they don’t know!
Recently, they found themselves in an even more unfavourable situation, since the house they live in has been sold. A factory is to be built on the site, so they have to move out at once. Where they will go and how they’ll manage– they don’t know.
“They’ve been understanding, but the deadline has already passed. Unfortunately, we don’t have a home of our own!”

Is this any way to live?!
The outlook for this family is very bleak. Inside the house, smoke from a faulty stove can be sensed, and there is a lot of humidity, which further threatens the already compromised health of the family members. The living room is reached via an uneven dirt floor. The question is, can such conditions even be called living?!
“We don’t even have running water, except for one outdoor tap in the yard. The electrical wiring is also bad, the power often goes out. In general, everything is very unsafe. No matter how hard we try to clean and whitewash the place, it’s pointless – everything is old and falling apart,” the mother added.

“They don’t say anything, they just don’t want to hang out with me!”
Unfortunately, Zorka and her brothers don’t have many friends. Because they are poor, they say that “the rich avoid them.”
“Sometimes they are nice, sometimes they are rude. They don’t say anything to me, they just don’t want to hang out with me. I even quit folk dancing because of that,” she said.

Hope has been born!
The Hornjak family first heard about the humanitarian organization Serbs for Serbs when we provided a home for another family in their village — you may remember the Čuturilov family, who had been living in a cave. Now that we have entered their lives, hope has been born within them as well. Hope that things can get better and that maybe they too will get a house.

So that they do not end up on the streets!
That is why we invite you to take part in our new campaign. Donate and help the Hornjak family experience better days. We may not be able to solve all of their problems, but we can provide them with a safe home and a more peaceful daily life. So that they do not end up on the streets!
